Simian in Iraq
Transforming Safety in One of the World’s Most Challenging Environments
In 2012, Simian International began operations in Iraq at the Majnoon Oil Field—one of the most complex and high-risk environments in the industry.
Following a serious scaffolding incident, Simian was engaged as a specialist consultancy and training provider to improve safety standards and rebuild workforce capability.
Operating in a region impacted by conflict, the challenges extended beyond technical issues. Workers faced difficult conditions, language barriers, and limited exposure to structured safety systems. Simian recognised that improving safety required more than enforcement—it required trust, engagement, and cultural understanding.
We introduced a new approach focused on mentoring, practical training, and collaboration. Experienced scaffolders worked directly alongside local teams, demonstrating safe methods and building confidence through hands-on learning.
Through this approach, Simian successfully:
- Introduced Iraq’s first UK-accredited scaffolding training programme
- Transformed informal practices into structured, compliant systems
- Developed a skilled and confident local workforce
- Achieved over 500,000 man-hours without a lost-time incident
